Look at the flip-side…

I wanted to share a very short story about perspective! Today, at work, a colleague came up to me and said that she was having a bad day and it seemed that everything was going wrong. Besides the extremely minor mistakes like making a latte instead of a cappuccino, or using semi-skimmed milk instead of skimmed milk, she said that on her way to work this morning she had lost £20. Just lost, dropped, somewhere between her home and work. She was kind of bummed out about it, and I know it sucks to lose money because I have done the same thing…usually between walking in to the pub and waking up the next morning.

Now, you could go on thinking about the money you just lost, and how much you wish you still had it tucked away in your pocket, or your purse, think about how happy that £20 is going to make some one else when they find it. By losing £20, which in the long run really isn’t that big of a deal, you have just made some else’s day! In a weeks time you probably would have forgotten that you lost that money, but the person that found it will remember that for a long time. And they may have a much more pressing need for that money than you. When I said this to her she smiled and said “Yeah, you’re right! That’s a good way of looking at it”. Hopefully I managed to get her to see the situation from a different angle.

So next time something ‘bad’ happens to you, try to look at it from the flip-side…
